Therapy for couples & families

Couples therapy and marriage counseling can strengthen your relationship.

Working on issues alongside the people who mean the most to you is different than talking about them in individual therapy. It’s harder.

And it’s often more effective.

Every couple is unique.

You may be seeking couples therapy because it seems like you can’t communicate anymore. Your relationship might look like:

Constant conflict

Conversations that start calm turn into World War III, and later you can’t even remember why you were fighting.

A wall has come up between you

You spend time together, but you couldn’t be further apart. There’s nothing to say and so much unsaid.

Living like roommates

You once had that spark, but now it feels awkward or strained. You’re not sure if you can get it back.

So how did it get this way? Is poor communication to blame?

The research tells us that there is more to it. Here’s what the neuroscience of love and connection tells us:

  1. You have a hard-wired style of reacting when there is conflict or disconnection in your relationship.

  2. This hard-wiring takes over when you are in a moment of disconnection or conflict with your partner. So that means even the best communication skills will not work in these moments.

  3. Despite how bleak that sounds, there is hope! Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) helps you understand the cycle you get caught in and how to re-wire your connection.

  4. This therapy can even help people change their hard-wired styles over time. Pretty cool!

Couples Therapy Myths

“Everyone who goes to couples therapy splits up.”

It is simply not true. It can feel terrifying, but it’s crucial to get to couples therapy as soon as you can. Just like anything corrosive, the longer you allow an unhealthy pattern in your relationship to go on, the more damage it will do.

“Couples therapists pick sides.”

When you come to my office, there are four of us in the room: the two of you, me, and your relationship. Your relationship is my client. As we work together, you will understand more and more what I mean by that. But know that I will protect your relationship fiercely, and I’m always looking out for it above all else.

“It is going to take forever.”

My goal is to make sure it takes the shortest amount of time it can take and still be lasting. I want you to get back to that loving connection you had as quickly as possible. However, just like any therapy (or anything in life), you’ll get out of it what you put in!

My work with families.

As an adult, you can do great work with an individual therapist on issues you’ve had with a parent. But doing family work with your actual parent provides a kind of healing you can’t get anywhere else.

Working with adult children and their parents is one of my favorite things to do. Because it doesn’t just heal past injuries, it sets a path for an easier, more connected future for generations to come!

“There is no challenge strong enough to destroy your marriage as long as you are both willing to stop fighting against each other, and start fighting for each other.”
